The Iberoamerican Congress On Biorefineries 2018 holds its 4th edition between October 24-26, in Jaen (Spain), and it is consolidated as the cientific congress where the possibilities of establishing biorefineries in specific areas are presented and evalutaed. Biorefineries are facilities that allow to obtain a wide range of products based on a renewable raw material, such as agricultural waste.
More than 250 researchers gathered at this international meeting, organized by the Iberoamerican Society for the Development of Biorefineries (SIADEB), a network that brings together experts from Iberoamerican counstries, and has the objective of promoting development of biorefineries and promote the necessary technological development for the installation of the new generation of biorefineries in these countries.
LIFE ALGAECAN coordinator and researchers from CARTIF, Jesús Mª Martín Marroquín, presented main innovationes of this initiative, its goals and achieved advances until now. The consortium of the project works on the design of a innovative concept for fruit and vegetables processing industry wastewater treatment based on heterotrophic microalgae culture to substitute, in the long term, the traditional aerobic digestion as preferred method for the treatment of these streams since instead of waste sludge and nutrients losses, added-value microalgae are produced.
